چکیده

How to treat well boundary conditions is a difficult issue when formulating and coding a multiphase numerical reservoir simulator. The difficulty arises because the partial differential equation governing multiphase subsurface flow is of a mixed parabolichyperbolic type. Maximum changes in primary variables and mass/heat fluxes occur at boundaries or well nodes. Consequently, these well nodes with small volume tend to be singular, leading to computational convergence problems. The conventional method of well treatment in geothermal or oil reservoir simulators is to use a sink/source term approach and to distribute flow rates by a potential or mobility allocation scheme for a multilayered well. However, this traditional method cannot handle a backflow problem, which may occur in a multilayered well in heterogeneous formations. This paper presents a “virtual node” method to handle a well bore either as a single node or several computational nodes screened and connected to many neighboring nodes for a multilayered well. The well bore can be vertical, inclined, or horizontal, and the well borehole node is treated in the same way as any other nonwell node for flow calculations. The solution at the well is then obtained by solving mass balance equations for the well node. It is shown that the new method provides a natural, physically consistent, and numerically efficient approach to handling well flow problems. Implementation of this new method for a three-phase flow reservoir simulator is discussed, and three examples are provided.

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics and its applications for multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian method based on a meshless discretization of partial differential equations. In this review, we present SPH discretization of the Navier-Stokes and advection-diffusionreaction equations, implementation of various boundary conditions, and time integration of the SPH equations, and we discuss applications of the SPH method for modeling pore-sc...

Gas-liquid Relative Permeability Estimation in 2D Porous Media by Lattice Boltzmann Method: Low Viscosity Ratio 2D LBM Relative Permeability

This work is a primary achievement in studying the CO2 and N2–oil systems. To predict gas-liquid relative permeability curves, a Shan-Chen type multicomponent multiphase lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase flow through 2D porous media is developed. Periodic and bounce back boundary conditions are applied to the model with the Guo scheme for the external body force (i.e.,...

A three-dimensional multiphase flow model for assessing NAPL contamination in porous and fractured media, 1. Formulation

A three-dimensional, three-phase numerical model is presented for simulating the movement of non-aqueous-phase liquids (NAPL's) through porous and fractured media. The model is designed for practical applica:ion to a wide variety of contamination and remediation scenarios involving light or dense NAPL's in heterogeneous subsurface systems. The model formulation is first derived for three-phase ...

Cocurrent spontaneous imbibition (COCSI) of an aqueous phase into matrix blocks arising from capillary forces is an important mechanism for petroleum recovery from fractured petroleum reservoirs. In this work, the modeling of countercurrent imbibition is used to develop the appropriate scaling equations. Considering the imbibition process and the water and oil movement respectively as the wet p...
